If you have a vertical modular washing machine, you may notice that it doesn’t respond after pressing the start button. One of the reasons to explain the problem may have to do with the lid switch and lid lock assembly. Whether the problem is specifically with the lid switch or the lid lock, it needs to be carefully diagnosed with the help of a professional appliance repair service technician. That is necessary to identify the exact cause of the problem since the symptoms are similar. The purpose of a lid switch/lock assemblyThe lid lock assembly which contains the lid switch and lid lock is meant for safety when operating vertical modular washing machine models. The main purpose of the lid switch is to detect when the washing machines lid is open so that the washer won’t start until the lid is safely closed. In addition to that safety measure is a lid lock that safely locks the lid during the spin cycle. That way the spinning parts of the washer cannot possibly hurt anyone operating the washer. Only a VMW type of washing machine needs a lid lock because it doesn’t include any braking mechanism and only comes to a stop within up to 30 seconds. On the other hand, direct drive washing machine models have brakes to stop almost instantly, so they don’t include any lid locks. Possible symptoms for lid lock assembly problems
A good indication that the lid switch or the lid lock may not be correctly working shows with the lid lock light flashing. If the lid switch can’t detect that the washer lid is closed, then the washing machine won’t start a spin cycle. The problem may therefore be solved by replacing the lid switch or the lid lock after carrying out some tests for troubleshooting. This is important because sometimes even though the lid lock light won’t indicate it, the lid lock may still be perfectly working except that the electronic control board won’t get a signal from the lid lock switch and will not start the spin cycle. Testing the lid lock mechanismRemember to check if the lid lock strike is broken or not before you start testing the lid lock. The lid lock in a washing machine hooks onto a lid lock strike in order to lock the lid safely. Also keep in mind that if someone forced the lid to open while it was still locked, that has probably internally broken the locking mechanism and the solution is to have the lid lock replaced. In order to start testing the lid lock mechanism you have to disconnect power from the washing machine and access the control board. Start by removing the screws holding the back panel right behind the control panel. Then from the front side of the control panel, insert a putty knife right in between the bottom side of the control panel and the washer lid. That should help to release the clips holding the control panel so that it can be set free for removal. That in turn should give you access to the electronic control board behind the control panel. You will then be able to locate the wire harness, a plug that has four wires in different colors; red, white, blue, and yellow. First you have to do the lid switch test for continuity. Do this while the lid is down and test for the continuity across the white wire and the blue wire. If there is no continuity, then you will have to replace the lid lock. The other test is for the lid lock solenoid and this includes testing for continuity across the yellow and the white wires. Your multimeter should read between 85 to 155 ohms of resistance. But in case you don’t get that, then it means you should replace the lid lock. You will not need to test the lid lock switch but you can know if it is defective if the lid lock is working without the lid lock light illuminating. In that case, the electronic control board will not be able to start the spin cycle. Replacing the lid switch/lock assemblyIn order to replace the lid lock, you have to start by disconnecting power to the washing machine and pull it away from the wall. Make sure to shut off the water valves then remove the screws holding the top back panel behind the control panel. Also remove the wiring harness cover. Go back to the front side of the washer and pull the top panel forward about half an inch before tilting it upwards only about quarter an inch, then pushing it backwards about quarter an inch also. It should now be released from the brackets. Once it’s free you can now tilt it all the way up until you have access to the entire lid lock assembly for removal and replacement. When your refrigerator isn’t cooling, one of the possible problems could be with the evaporator fan located inside the back wall of your appliance, either behind one or more panels at the back of the freezer or refrigerator compartments. The evaporator fan is usually mounted right onto the evaporator assembly. The fan if working normally blows air through the evaporator fins where heat is absorbed so that cool air is then blown throughout the freezer and refrigerator compartments. If the fan is not running or if not blowing cool air, you will need to check it and may end up replacing it. so it is important to understand some of the steps you will need to take in order to properly troubleshoot and fix any possible problems with your refrigerator’s evaporator fan. That includes the continuity checks for identifying the problem and making sure that the evaporator fan motor, the electronic control board and also the wiring connecting them are correctly working. How to troubleshoot and fix the evaporator fan problems if a refrigerator is not coolingThe evaporator fan typically should start running as soon as you hear your refrigerator compressor turning on. Physical obstruction is often the reason why the evaporator fan cannot run freely. Ice build up on the evaporator blades is a common problem preventing free operation of the fan. Ice buildup can be simply solved by melting the ice unless it has caused further damage like making the blades to become bent and causing jamming or having the fan motor windings become damaged. Bent fan blades can only be replaced and not straightened to avoid getting them out of balance. Dirt build up on the fan motor bearings can also cause problems but requires application of penetrating oil to fix the problem. If your fridge evaporator fan doesn’t turn on, here are a few things that you will need to check for troubleshooting to identify and fix the problem: Checking the electronic control boardYou will need to enter into the diagnostic test mode and confirm if during that mode the evaporator fan can start running. The instructions to enter into the diagnostic test mode differ from one model to another, so you want to consult the technical sheet often taped at the back of your refrigerator or behind the front grill at the bottom side. If the fan runs during the test mode and not in normal operation, you will need to have the electronic control board replaced. How to troubleshoot the wiring problemsWhen the evaporator fan fails to run during the diagnostic test mode, the problem may be to do with a faulty control board, bad evaporator fan or even a break within the wiring connections in-between. Unplug the refrigerator from power outlet for safety and check for continuity through the wiring. You will have to unscrew the control box to remove it then look for the wire supplying power to fan. Inspect the wire for physical damage and if none still go ahead to check continuity using a multimeter. You have to remove the control board then drop the back freezer panel to unplug the evaporator fan and access the wiring. You should have 2 wires to check continuity, most likely a red wire and a blue one. For each of the wires your multimeter needs to read near zero ohms. In case there is no continuity with either wire, you will need to find where the break is and that requires unplugging the wire harness from the ceiling to check for continuity between the control board’s plug on the bad wire and the ceiling plug. If no continuity, the multimeter should read infinite resistance (displays 1) and you should repair the broken wire or replace the wire harness. If no problem with continuity, then the problem could be either with the electronic control board or the fan motor. Examining the fan motor and the electronic control boardYour refrigerator fan motor may have a control board inside of the motor casing and it may not be possible to check for continuity other than looking out for visible burn marks on the control board. If any burns are seen you need to replace the fan motor. If none, you may need experienced tech to do further tests and determine if the problem could be with the electronic control board not sending power to the fan motor. The post How To Hire An Appliance Repair Company During The COVID-19 Pandemic appeared first on Appliance Repair Houston Considering the high cost of major appliances that we use in our homes today, it has become increasingly important to understand how long each type of appliance should last. You also want to know the life expectancy of an appliance to help you determine when you should consider repairing or replacing. How long should an appliance last? The number of people in your household, how often they use an appliance, and how well the appliance is maintained, are among the most important factors that determine how long it may last. What appliances last the longest?A gas range has the longest lifespan of about 15 years while dishwashers and microwave ovens have the shortest life expediencies of about 9 years. When should you replace appliances?Generally you should replace appliances that are no longer worth fixing. For major appliances this is most likely to happen if they have already reached their life expectancy, and if at that point in time the appliance stops working. Beyond the lifespan of an appliance, even with good maintenance it may not function properly. Sometimes you can also replace an appliance years before its expected lifespan. That is especially the case if the appliance breaks down due to a major problem that makes it expensive to fix compared to buying a new one. For cheap countertop appliances like microwave ovens and icemakers, it makes sense to replace since repairs would cost more or less the same as the prices of new ones. How long does a refrigerator usually last?In most cases a fridge should last about 10 to 13 years and in some few cases up to 18 years. So the average life expectancy of a refrigerator is about 13 years. Good maintenance including cleaning and dusting off the condenser coils can be useful in extending the lifespan of your refrigerator. You need to do that at about twice a year. The coils are mounted at the backside of some refrigerator models or across the bottom for other models. Is it worth repairing a fridge? You will need to find the answer to this question: Is it cheaper to repair or replace a refrigerator? A refrigerator is generally an expensive appliance and as long as it is still within the expected lifespan you want to consider repairing it in most cases. But there are still relatively cheaper types of refrigerators which could develop major problems like a broken compressor that would be expensive to repair. In that case, and especially if the refrigerator is closer to its full lifespan, you may have to replace instead of repairing. Which refrigerator brand is most reliable?Whirlpool is considered the most reliable brand for refrigerators and still the most recommended overall for major household appliance brands. How long does a washing machine last? The number of years your washer will last will depend on how often it is put to use and the types of loads done. Generally, a washing machine should last about 12-14 years, with the top load washers lasting a bit longer than their front load counterparts. Is a washer dryer combo worth it?Most people would prefer separate units for their washers and dryers so that they have the option to replace one at a time when needed. What brand of washing machine is the most reliable?Brands considered most reliable for washers include Whirlpool, LG, and Samsung. But since LG, and Samsung are foreign brands, sometimes it takes longer to get their parts. So for that reason Whirlpool is the best choice for washing machines. Is it worth repairing a washing machine? If the washer is still under warranty, then you would easily choose to have it repaired as you won’t pay for it. Even if that’s not the case, you may still want it repaired considering the cost of repair and how old the appliance is. If the cost of repair is 50% or more the price of a new washer, then at that point you want to replace. How long does a dryer last?Generally, the lifespan of a dryer is the same as that of a washer at about 13 years. Some ways to extend the lifespan of your washer and dryer
How long does a dishwasher last?In most cases a dishwasher will last between 7 and 10 years and the lifespan on average is about 9 years. How long the dishwasher lasts can depend on factors like its brand, quality, usage frequency, care and maintenance. How do you know when your dishwasher needs to be replaced? The age of your dishwasher matters, but in addition to that problems like rust, water leaking, spotty and dirty dishes, door not locking and clogged dishwasher drain are signs that you may need to replace the appliance. Otherwise Is it worth fixing a dishwasher? It is worth having it fixed if the cost of repair is not 50% or more than its price. How long does a gas range last?Gas ranges can last about 15 years on average compared to their electric counterparts that last about 13 years on average. Regularly cleaning your stove and oven is a good maintenance practice to extend their lifespan. When should I replace my gas stove? If you know your gas stove is close to the end of its lifespan in addition to problems such as the gas oven not lighting, oven not heating up, worktops scorching while cooking, oven is uncleanable and so on, you may need to replace it. How long does a microwave oven last?Your microwave will last for about 9 to 10 years and with good care and maintenance will require little or no repairs during the lifespan. But as far as trying to make it last is concerned, all you can do is regular cleaning while being gentle with its door. The sensor monitors the air temperature inside the oven range and is electrically wired to a control board. The control board reads the oven temperature sensor to determine if it should switch on and off the oven’s heating elements. So how can we tell if the temperature sensor of the range is faulty and requires replacement? There are specific symptoms that we can observe with the oven to indicate if the problem lies with the sensor. How the sensor works with the thermostatRange ovens have a thermostat and it is easy to understand how it works. The thermostat is just an on and off switch which controls the ovens heating elements. This works together with the temperature sensor so that the heating elements in the oven can be controlled to reach correct temperatures, the same as indicated on the dial. The sensor looks like a long narrow tube and can be found on the backside of the oven appliance towards the top. The sensor has to indicate that the right temperature has been reached for the thermostat to shut off the heating elements. When you suspect that the thermostat is shutting off the oven at the incorrect temperature, then it may need to be recalibrated. You can do this by preheating the oven and then using a thermometer to test. If you get a difference of more than 10 degrees Celsius, then what you may need to do is to replace the temperature sensor. Signs indicating the oven temperature sensor is not working properly and what to doWhen the oven is not heating to reach the same temperature as indicated on the oven dial, then it means there’s a problem with the way the sensor is working. The way you will notice this is with the food taking longer to cook or if the food will still be undercooked after the normal time has completed. Sometimes it could be that the sensor is touching the oven wall and therefore it is not able to read the correct internal temperature in the oven. What is needed in that case is just the repositioning of the sensor. In ovens, sensors work as resistance temperature detectors or thermistors. The resistance on the sensor, depending on its type, either increases or decreases with the increase in temperature. Positive temperature coefficient thermistors increase their resistance with an increase in temperature while negative temperature coefficient thermistors decrease their resistance. The control reads the change in resistance on the thermistor to close or open electrical relays for switching on and off power to the oven’s heating elements. An ohmmeter is used to test if the sensor is functioning correctly. When food is not cooking evenly with some parts overcooked and others still raw, it may be due to wear and tear of the thermistor. In that case you will need to replace the sensor. With the help of a professional appliance repair technician, you can easily get your oven tested for any problems with a temperature sensor that may need replacement. Utility companies add that scent to help in detecting gas leaks since the gas itself is odorless and colorless. So if your gas oven or gas stove smells like gas when off, you may need to check your appliances to identify the exact source of the gas leak. Hissing sound for gas leakA hissing sound from your gas appliance or anywhere along the gas lines or fittings is a clear indication of gas leaking. You will also be able to smell the gas leaking in such a manner and you should immediately turn off the main gas valve to your appliances. After that open all the windows and step outside the house to call the gas company if the leak is on the gas line. If the leak is within your stove or oven, you should call a professional gas oven repair expert to fix it. If in the first place you detected gas leak by smelling it in the air inside your home and you were not necessarily close to the appliance, you want to get outside your house immediately. Avoid switching on any lights or operating electronics and gadgets like your phone as that could ignite the gas and cause fire. Open the windows as you walk outside to call the gas company for the emergency. Soap solution bubble tests for gas leaksIt’s hard to tell when gas leaks slowly somewhere along the gas line and other gas fittings. So use warm soapy water to spray those areas where you suspect the gas leaks. If there is any gas leak you will immediately notice gas bubbles escaping from the soapy water film. That is one of the most common methods professional appliance service technicians use to detect gas leaks, so it is very reliable. Other ways on how to tell if oven is leaking gasIf for some reason you can’t smell any gas leaking from your appliances, there are other ways to check for signs of gas leaks. Slow gas leaks may not necessarily cause an odor that makes it obvious for detection. If you notice that the color of flame from your gas stove burners is orange or yellowish, it could be an indication of a slow gas leak. With no gas leak you should normally get a strong blue flame from the gas burners of your appliance. The slow gas leak could also be the cause of any plants in your home that suddenly start dying without any other possible reason to explain it. An increase in gas bills that doesn’t make sense to you as far as the way you use your gas appliances is concerned could also be as a result of a gas leak that has been taking place. If on the outside of your gas appliance you notice any marks of black soot, it is also another sign for possible gas leak. The capacitor works together with a diode to convert alternative current (AC) into direct current (DC) and to double the voltage. If the capacitor stops working the entire high voltage system also stops working and the microwave does not heat. So the procedure for microwave oven troubleshooting will include testing the microwave capacitor. The process to test the high voltage capacitor typically follows three main steps:
Unplug Microwave And Discharge High Voltage CapacitorBefore you start testing the microwave capacitor, make sure to star by unplugging the microwave from the power outlet on the wall. The next most important thing to do is to make sure that you discharge the high voltage capacitor because that may store about 3000 volts, which can potentially kill a human being instantly from electrical shock. To discharge it, you can use pliers with properly insulated handle and place it across each of the terminals. That will discharge the potentially stored electrical energy to avoid injury. While you do that make sure not to touch the metallic part of the pliers or any other tool you use to release the stored electrical charge. Check For ContinuityUse a multimeter with capacitance checking capability to help determine if your microwave’s capacitor has failed. First set your multimeter to continuity and connect the clips at the end of both wires from the multimeter across the terminals of the capacitor. There should be no continuity and if any then it’s bad capacitor. Also check for continuity between each of the terminals and the body of the capacitor. Again there should not be any continuity. If there is any continuity noticed then it means the capacitor is bad and if used can blow the main fuse of the microwave oven. Test The Inbuilt ResistorThe capacitor also has an inbuilt resistor that will also need to be tested and make sure the resistance is within the correct range. You will need to switch the multimeter to measure resistance in ohms (symbol: Ω) by connecting the wires from the multimeter across the terminals of the capacitor. Most microwave capacitors are likely to have the 10 mega ohms resistor and that is usually indicated somewhere on the body of the capacitor. When you check the resistance, your multimeter may not read exactly 10 mega ohms but should be close to that. It may fall within a range like 10 – 12 mega ohms, but if not close enough then it would mean the inbuilt resistor is bad. In the past, most, if not all, of the premium top load washing machines incorporated the agitator as a pertinent feature. More recently, the development of new and more capable washing machines has seen the rise of top load washing machines that do not need an agitator. However, manufacturers found it necessary to have this feature in their models owing to consumer demand. So, what is an agitator, and what are its uses in a washing machine? Herein we will explore everything about agitators with a keen interest in their purpose. If you want to learn more about this feature, read on. A Washing Machine Agitator: What Is It?An agitator is a spindle-piece found in the middle of the drum in top-load washing machines. The agitator comes in many different designs and styles, but they are all meant to increase clothes turnover within the washing machine. The most common and popular agitators on the market are the straight-vane and the more modern variety, the dual-action agitators. Generally speaking, the straight-vane agitator is a single agitator piece with fins on its side and at the bottom. The dual-action agitator, which is a modern take of the agitator, is a two-piece device. The bottom piece of the agitator has side and bottom fins that move back and forth, while the top part has a spiral/corkscrew shape that spins clockwise. The top piece helps to push clothes downwards to back and forth movement. What Is The Function Of An AgitatorAs described above, the agitator is primarily used to create the highest turnover of water and clothes. To this end, the agitator creates back and forth motion as well as up and down water and clothes movement. The combined flow of water and clothes helps the clothes rub against one another more effectively, akin to hand-washing the clothes. Consequently, the agitator enhances the cleaning action within a washing machine, which, in turn, makes a washing machine more effective at cleaning clothes. Compared to washing machines without agitators (machines that use a wash plate), the washing machine with an agitator tends to be more capable of removing a wide variety of stains and better cleaning clothes in general. What Are The Demerits Of The AgitatorThe agitator has been designed to increase clothes turnover. However, some washing machines tend to have a virulent washing action, which can compromise the structure of your soft clothes and, sometimes even tough garments. Consequently, agitators are renowned for increasing wear and tear of clothes, reducing their lifespan. The agitator takes up space, which would have otherwise been used to cram more clothes. The spindle and fins structure also makes the unloading of clothes a tad more difficult. The Bottom Line – Are Agitators Necessary? There is a lot consider as far as agitators go. For instance, do you prioritize effective clothes washing or do you prefer saving the life of your clothes? Are you looking for a budget washing machine, or are you interested in having the very best washing machine on the market? All things considered, if you want a washing machine designed for effective washing, you should consider buying a washing machine with an agitator.

The fridge will need to be at a certain temperature in order to keep the foods from spoiling. When the fridge temperature is right, foods can last a while without a person having to throw them out because they are no longer good to eat. What Happens If Food Goes Bad In A Fridge? If the fridge is not at the right temperature and the food spoils, a person can get very sick from eating it. They will get food poisoning. This is why it’s so important to have the fridge set at the right temperature so that the food is still good to eat. How To Check The TemperatureIn most cases, the fridge gets the cold air from the freezer. The air circulates from the freezer into the fridge via vents. It’s important to make sure that the vents are not blocked so that the fridge will become cold enough. There are controls that can be set to keep foods at the right temperature. 0 – 5 degrees for the freezer and 38 for the fridge. A great way to measure it is by using a cup of water with a cooking thermometer put inside it and placing this into the fridge for 2 hours of time. When testing the freezer, a person should substitute cooking oil in place of water. Most Refrigerators Come With A Built-In ThermometerMost of the newer refrigerators come with a built-in thermometer so that people know that their food is being kept cold correctly. If they don’t have one, they can make their own thermometer. This is done by using water to determine if it is at the right temperature to keep your foods cold. Since this can give an approximate temperature, it’s always best to get a thermometer. Checking Temperature With A Container Of WaterYou can put a container of water in the fridge to check the temperature. After a couple of hours, you will want to take a look at the container of water. You will want to look for condensation. If the condensation appears quickly that means that the water is very cold. If ice appears, the fridge is too cold. It is supposed to be at 38 degrees. You will want to adjust your controls to make it less cold. This will give you a way to judge the fridge temperature until you are able to get a thermometer. The thermometer is the best way to tell if it is correct so that you can keep your food good for as long as possible. People should invest in a modern fridge when they can but if they have one that doesn’t have a thermometer in it, they can still make sure that their foods are being kept cold. This is important so that they will be able to feel confident in eating the foods that they have stored in it.

But for those using natural gas as the fuel in their range, the presence of leaks is a very real danger to your home and loved ones. Natural gas in its natural form is completely odorless, the signature “bad eggs” smell is added to the natural gas in the form of the chemical Mercaptan, which makes it safer for use. Nevertheless, a very small leak may not circulate enough gas to be detected by smell. This is dangerous because the small leak can disperse gas into the air before it has been detected. For this reason it is important that gas leaks are checked regularly. How To Check For a Gas Leak In Stove – Bubble TestLong before the invention of gas detecting gaskets and gadgets, there was a simple and fairly-reliable solution to detecting gas leaks. A simple soap and water solution has been used for pinpointing gas leaks along tubes and pipes. Nowadays, you can find some bespoke solutions for this task that provide more accurate results. This is because these custom-made solutions adhere better to pipes and fittings than simple soap and water. This means that the results will be more accurate and easier to produce than with your typical soap and water –– just spray the product on the area suspected of leaking and watch for the tell-tale bubbles. Detecting a gas leak in your range or stove– Electronic Gas Leak DetectorsAdvanced electronic gas leak detectors aren’t cheap, and this could be why most homeowners will choose to use their nose or soap and water for this task. Actually, it will be hard to find a good option for less than $40 and the ones that are available at this low price are pretty standard and won’t have an LCD or any of the other sophisticated gadgets that higher-end items may have. But, your standard electronic gas detector can be counted on to emit a loud alarm whenever the smallest gas leak is detected. This is the type of device most of the professional range and stove service professionals will use. The small portable types are activated with the push of a button and will sound when a leak has been detected. Where to Check For Gas LeaksBegin your search for the leak around the flexible hose that connects the stove to the gas lines. The flexible piping is the section of the gas system most vulnerable to damage and leaking. To detect a leak, cover this section of the pipe with leak detection solution or soapy water. Alternatively, you can also slowly glide the leak detector across the length of the pipe to detect any leaks. If the flex pipe seems to be fine, move your search to the cut-off valve, also inspect the controller valves on the stove, range and oven. There is also a valve in the oven that is controlled by a thermostat as well as several internal connections that could be leaking. Finally, check the pilot light connections if this type are in use. What Should You Do When You Detect A Leak?Repairing a leak is a fairly simple task and can be performed by anyone with basic DIY skills. The best way to repair a leak is to replace the flex pipe, burner-control valve or thermostat control valve. Just be sure to find the right piece for replacement at your local supplies store –– you may need a genuine part for changing internal valves. On the other hand, if you find that the leak is coming from the cut-off valve or the valve-s shat, you will need to call in professional help. It is important to avoid future issues and ensuring all leaks are properly addressed by a specialist. Dryer, washing machine or refrigerator technicians may not be fully qualified to address this important task. Inexperienced technicians have a tendency to make matters worse, which can be life threatening in this case. For this reason, it is important to call in a specialist when detecting and repairing leaks you can’t address yourself. WarningBefore making any attempt to repair a leak yourself, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU SHUT OFF THE GAS SUPPLY. After the gas supply to your home has been properly shut off, you can burn out the remaining gas in the tubes by lighting the stove, within a minute the last of the gas should be burnt away and you can begin your work. This will reduce the risk of painful injuries or death.
